Minimum 4×4 ft interior (1 person), 4×5 or 5×5 (2 person), 5×6+ (3–5 person); 7–8 ft ceiling ideal, 6.5 ft minimum; within ~50 ft of panel. No plumbing, drain, waterproof floor or special ventilation needed — convenience drives use (Finnish data: 4–7×/week best).[1]

Custom infrared saunas fall under NEC Article 424 (fixed electric space heating), not Article 422 appliances. SaunaCloud states code expert staff will speak with inspectors directly — useful if an inspector misclassifies the kit.[1] Always use a licensed electrician with manufacturer wiring diagrams.
Framing quick spec
Standard 2×4 + R-13 + foil-facing vapor barrier (never skip — mold risk $10k–$30k), solid cedar interior unfinished, tempered glass door. Closet conversions are among the most common installs.[1]
